The greeting card you are holding exists because people like you helped me achieve my goals. I was motivated to work hard at whatever I did and never give up. I learned to believe in myself and others. Through my cards, I want to help families recognize how many opportunities and great moments they will experience having a person with a developmental disability in their life. Living my life has its challenges, but it’s also a lot of fun! That’s why my company Inspires2aspire. – Todd
Among all the articles Todd’s father read in the beginning of their journey, he found one sentence, told himself this was all they needed to know and stuck it up on the wall. It read, “The opportunities and family support given to a person with Down Syndrome can greatly enhance their abilities.” They wish there had been a role model for them when Todd was born in 1982.
The nursery rhyme states “words will never hurt me,” but we all know that words do hurt. The word “handicap” originated as a “cap in hand” because it was used to describe individuals who often had to beg to survive. Fortunately, today we are more sensitive to the words we use to describe individuals with physical or developmental disabilities: friend, classmate, co-worker, neighbor are just a few words that come to mind.
